Robert Pendergast of St. Louis PEI writes......
Carrie Ann and Chris Dunbar are the enthusiastic, young owners of Atlantic Heritage Gardens. http://www.ahgardens.com/
It is a large-scale market garden that they have started as a way of keeping alive some delicious heritage varieties of fruits and vegetables while serving a curious and hungry public! They live on the western bank of the Kildare river with their one year old daughter Laurel.
Last year, while following a leadership course, Chris came upon the idea of a member-supported business concept known as Community Supported Agriculture (C.S. A). He and Carrie Ann have been living on the farm that has been in the Dunbar family since over a hundred years ago. What was old has become new once again. They will be growing and providing freshly harvested seasonal fruits and vegetables each week for 20 weeks this year. They feel that it is a unique way to help others become reconnected with the land around them. A hand-harvested mixed box of colorful, flavorful fruits and vegetables will cost $18 per week. They are looking for households interested in becoming members of their C.S.A for their first session in operation.
During my visit to their well-organized farm, I learned of their research and development for this new venture. They have spent the last year doing an analysis of the household food buying trends in West Prince and ran their crops through an experimental phase during last spring and summer. They aim to involve at least 50 households as they look ambitiously towards the future.
Both Chris and Carrie Ann have grown up in this area. They look forward to putting a friendly and responsible face behind their product in the hopes that their neighbors throughout West Prince will take notice. I have found that more and more Islanders are being openly critical about the anonymity of the products for sale in the large-scale surfaces of the mega-grocery stores. I am looking to support locally as much as possible and will be happy to sign up my family for this fresh, local service!
To guarantee your spot in this exciting new venture, please contact Carrie Ann Dunbar at 902 853 2012. Inquire about their fresh cut flowers and natural beef!
Hi Hope,
Who is this Robert Pendergast guy and where is St.Louis?
The "Share the Harvest" program sounds like a winner! Will they be hosting some kind of event up there in West Prince as a unique way to generate interest in their new service?
Pendy.
