David and Edith Ling, North Winsloe, P. E. I. Tel: 368- 1262
I have really enjoyed meeting David and Edith. Both of them have a great energy, and like many farmers on PEI they want to build up the local food community by supporting more restorative farming practices. The Lings are not just operating a farm and making a living; they have a personal connection to their land and animals. They view their herd as part of the entire system and treat each animal with care and reverence. I was particularly amazed at their commitment to using homeopathic remedies on their cattle.
Edith proudly stated:
“There are many benefits to having a small herd of cattle. We care about each animal, and take preventative measures to ensure that they are healthy.”
We began farming without the use of chemicals and artificial fertilizers in the spring of 1985. Prior to that time we had been farming using conventional methods. We experienced serious soil erosion problems prior to 1985 and realized that changes had to be made in our farming practices if we were to maintain and improve the quality of our soil.
It took five years of farming without chemicals before we saw life coming back into the soil. It became much easier to work the land and the micro-organisms increased greatly. Earthworms showed up in abundance!
We take great care in raising our beef cattle and feel that we do not need to use antibiotics or growth hormones. Some of the foundations of our farming include:
•We use homeopathic remedies to build up the animal's immune system. Given that the herd is relatively small, we are able to be vigilant and aware of each animal’s behavior and physical health. By using homeopathic remedies, that are also safe for humans, we can prevent many ailments before they occur.
•Cattle are pasture fed as long as possible. Pastures are rotated
several times each week to allow the cattle to have fresh grass available.
•During the winter we feed our cattle haylage and dry hay. We grow a small acreage of grain using heritage seeds (Charlottetown 80 barley and Gary oats) along with Century peas. No chemicals sprays are used on the farm.
•Manure from the livestock operation is made into compost and spread on the fields in the fall. As soon as the grain is harvested, compost is applied and the fields are tilled in time to allow a growth of volunteer grain and weed seeds to provide a protective cover for the fields for the winter.
Our beef is marketed each Saturday morning at the Charlottetown Farmers Market. Freezer lots are also available. Our customers are very happy with the flavor and the texture and tell us they can't find such quality beef in the supermarkets.
It is most gratifying to know that we are supplying a quality product, free of chemicals; for people to enjoy. Our belief is that our soil is a precious resource, borrowed from future generations. As such, we must treat it with the utmost care.
We believe that healthy soil, healthy crops and healthy livestock- all in turn contribute to the health of the individual.
